When is it time to replace my furnace?

If you’re thinking of replacing your furnace, there are several factors you should consider, including age, maintenance, cost of energy, comfort level, and other environmental factors within your home.

How old is your furnace?

If your furnace is more than 15 years old, it may be time to replace it. It is better to replace it before it becomes useless, because you don’t want to be stuck without one in an emergency. Also, if you’re finding that your furnace needs repair often, it’s probably time to replace it.

When was the last time you had your furnace maintained?

If you have not properly maintained your furnace, there is a good chance it will need replacement. If it’s been a few years since you had your furnace inspected, make an appointment before it’s too late. Even if your furnace is new, HVAC experts suggest yearly maintenance. Think of your furnace as a new car – you still need to maintain it. Proper maintenance and service on your furnace can eliminate higher energy bills, health issues, and expensive repair and replacement costs.

Has your energy bill increased significantly?

Higher energy bills are a good indicator that your furnace either needs repair or replacement. As furnaces age, they lose their efficiency.

Are some rooms hotter than others?

If you find yourself colder in some rooms and hotter than others and are constantly adjusting your thermostat, chances are you need maintenance or repair for your furnace.

Does your furnace make noise or run excessively?

Furnace fans that run excessively or make buzzing, rattling, or squeaking noises are signs that it may be replaced.

Does your home feel or smell funny?

Old furnaces tend to put out excessive dust, causing the home to feel stuffy, which can increase symptoms of allergy sufferers.
